CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction is the first in South Carolina to offer breast reconstruction surgery with ReSensation, a new surgical method designed to restore sensation after a mastectomy. This latest innovation is part of the Center's commitment to superior cancer care and patient outcomes for women.
"With this new surgical method, we are not only able to provide patients with a more natural-looking breast, but the possibility that the breast will feel more natural to them as well," said James E. Craigie M.D. "ReSensation is an exciting development in care that we hope will help bring our patients that much closer to feeling like themselves during and after treatment."
During a mastectomy, nerves that provide sensation to the breast are cut when breast tissue is removed. ReSensation makes it possible to connect the nerves in the newly restored breast, and is performed as part of autologous or free flap breast reconstruction.
The procedure is made possible by medical technology company AxoGen and its portfolio of peripheral nerve repair products, including the Avance® Nerve Graft. This donated human nerve allograft, provides a bridge between the nerves in the chest that were cut in a mastectomy and the nerves of the restored breast. Over time, the allograft nerve tissue becomes a part of the patient's body.
"We're excited to offer this cutting-edge procedure to our patients and are committed to offering the women of South Carolina the best care possible," continued Richard M. Kline Jr., M.D. "It is our goal to make sure every patient understands her options for reconstruction and provide access to pioneering surgical treatments that could help improve her quality of life."
