The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley Announces 1 Million Meals Made Possible by Watertree Health®

PHARR, Texas, Nov. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley announced that Watertree Health, a leading health care company providing free prescription discount cards benefitting nonprofits, has helped provide 1 million meals to the Rio Grande Valley community since their partnership program was established five years ago. The organizations are aligned in their mission to make people healthier by combating food insecurity and prescription non-compliance. The program is structured so that Watertree Health makes a donation to Food Bank RGV each time someone saves using the prescription discount card benefitting this Food Bank.

CEO of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley Terri Drefke and Watertree Health President Shane Power present the One Millionth Meal to Food Bank RGV Client Mr. Torres Jr. at a press conference held today at Food Bank RGV, as part of the celebration of Two Million Meals.

The two organizations share the goal of tackling several issues facing the RGV area. Overall, at least 1 in 4 people don't fill their prescriptions due to cost and/or are food insecure. Additionally, 65% of the Food Bank RGV clients choose between food and medicine on a monthly basis. The prescription discount card program benefitting this Food Bank helps put food on the table and medicine in the cabinets in RGV households that cannot afford these basic necessities.
