LONDON, Nov. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The South African Gas Industry, including Distribution by Pipeline: Currently South Africa has 1.35GW of gas-fired generation capacity which constitutes a mere 3.76% of the nation's primary energy mix. The country's share of global gas consumption in 2016 was only 0.1% and 78% of its total consumption of 5.1 billion cubic metres of gas was imported via pipeline from neighbouring Mozambique. Although the South African government has reaffirmed that the proposed nuclear build programme remains on the agenda, the Department of Energy has identified the harnessing of both conventional and unconventional forms of gas as a strategic imperative.

Onshore and Offshore Reserves: Numerous offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration licences have been issued in recent years and more than 300 oil and gas exploration wells have been drilled. Gas finds have been made in undeveloped fields in the Pletmos Basin, as well as in the South African part of the Orange Basin. The Ibhubesi Gas Project, which lies 80km off the coast of the Northern Cape, has proven gas reserves of half a trillion cubic feet and is operated as a joint venture between PetroSA and Sunbird Energy Holdings. Proven onshore reserves of 25 billion cubic feet of natural gas and helium estimated to be worth around R2.2bn are being commercialised by alternative energy company Renergen Limited, through its subsidiary TETRA 4 (Pty) Ltd in partnership with Afrox. Despite opposition from anti-fracking lobby groups, exploration licences for onshore shale gas exploration in the semi-desert Karoo region are expected to be issued in September 2017.
