The Industry-Academia Partnership Announces Workshop at Cornell University to Address the Future Technology Demands of the Data Center and Cloud

Multiple Academia and Industry Leaders to Convene at Workshop on October 18

LOS GATOS, Calif., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Industry-Academia Partnership (IAP) today announced the 2013 Workshop at Cornell University in the Statler Amphitheater on October 18, with the theme "Meeting the Future Needs of the Data Center and Cloud". The IAP is a new association formed to address the revolutionary changes required for the underlying hardware and software as multi-core compute, storage and networking converge for the future data center and cloud.

Speakers from industry and academia will describe their research and development efforts underway to meet the future needs of the data center and cloud. Speakers and participants from industry include Canonical, Cavium, Google, Imagination Technologies, Samsung, and many others.

In addition to the presentations on hardware and software technologies, there will be a panel discussion on the strategies and solutions to reduce the extraordinary power demands of future data centers, including the potential energy savings of the emerging System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for servers based on the x86 and ARM instruction set architectures.

A student poster session with awards for best posters is scheduled for both undergraduate and graduate students to describe their cloud related research projects and findings.

Workshop Organizers include Professor Jose Martinez of Cornell University, Dr. Kim Hazelwood of Google, and Dr. Jim Ballingall, IAP Executive Director.

Professor Martinez commented, "The IAP Workshop at Cornell will provide an effective venue for academic researchers and industry experts to exchange ideas and to spur collaborative work. The goal is to push the envelope in this important domain."

The keynote "Demands and Challenges Facing the Future Data Center" will be delivered by Kiko Reis, Vice President of Technology Solutions at Canonical, the provider of the popular Ubuntu operating system, widely deployed in the cloud, as well as desktop and mobile devices. Reis stated, "the IAP has aligned with the goal expressed recently by several leading computer scientists and engineers¹, to realize an exa-op data center that consumes no more than 10 megawatts by 2020, improving energy efficiency by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. It is clear that contributions from a wide cross section of industry and academia, as well as the entire hardware and software value chain, will be required to meet this goal."
