The McGregor Foundation Distribution Continues to Focus on Seniors in Need

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The McGregor Foundation, in its semi-annual grant making cycle, has awarded $383,809 to 16 local service-providers, including $82,652 to University Hospitals for the development of a special training program for family caregivers of older adults with heart failure.

"Our focus is supporting organizations that help Northeast Ohio's neediest seniors and those who care for them," says Rob Hilton, president and chief executive officer of the McGregor Foundation. "This has not changed since we started the Foundation a decade ago. Unfortunately, however, we can only support a fraction of those seeking funding. The safety net of basic human services in our region is broken."

Additional McGregor grants include $35,000 to the Legal Aid Society for the Elder Law and Community Engagement Project; $30,000 to the East End Neighborhood House to transition into a partnership with the Senior Transportation Connection, and $30,000 to the Golden Age Centers for the home-delivered meal program.

McGregor, the only foundation in Ohio devoted exclusively to seniors, has distributed more than $9 million since its formation in 2002.

Other grants in the current cycle:  

• Grantmakers in Aging, 2012 Annual Conference in Cleveland, $25,000.
• International Association of Homes and Services for Ageing, 2012 Applied Research in Global Ageing Forum: Translating Research Into Practice, $25,000.
• Salvation Army, senior services and nutrition program at the West Park Corps, $25,000.
• Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc., the Bridgeport Market, Cafe & Community Kitchen, $23,500.
• Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, providing services and devices to economically disadvantaged seniors, $20,000.
• Home Repair Resource Center, counseling seniors on home repairs, $20,000.
• Senior Citizen Resources, Inc., the senior transportation program, $20,000.
• Cleveland TOPS Swingband Foundation, senior outreach programming, $15,000.
• Asian Services in Action Inc., Senior Success, a program training older bilingual Asian leaders to help their peers access benefits and resources, $10,850.
• Greater Cleveland Volunteers, Community Volunteers Program, $10,000.
• Towards Employment, Achieve, a job retention program for long-term care workers, $10,000.

The McGregor Foundation is part of The A.M. McGregor Group, the oldest not-for-profit, non-sectarian provider and benefactor of aging services in Northeast Ohio. 

The Group also operates The Gardens, a nursing facility for 149 residents in private-rooms on a 32-acre campus in East Cleveland. Adjacent to the Gardens is the A.M. McGregor Home, which includes 65 affordable independent and assisted living apartments.

In addition, McGregor operates McGregor at Overlook, a 25-room nursing home atop Cedar Hill in Cleveland Heights, as well as the city-wide Medicaid and Medicare-funded Program for the All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), one of only two such programs in Ohio.
