The Metropolitan Movers Association Informs Its Associates of Assistance With Union Disturbances
NEW YORK, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Metropolitan Movers Association (MMA) is offering its assistance with recent conflicts between the International Brotherhood of Teamsters ("Local 814") and Local 1212, United Service Workers Union, International Union of Journeymen and Allied Trades ("Local 1212"). Recently, the New York City Comptroller's Office conducted a survey to determine the prevailing wage for the moving and furniture delivery industry in the metropolitan area. The Comptroller's office asserts that the Local 814 collective bargaining agreement determines the prevailing wage. MMA and Local 1212 believe that this determination is based on false and/or incomplete data, and is reversible as a matter of law. Accordingly, the MMA plans to initiate legal action nullifying the Comptroller's actions.
Local 814 has been contacting building managers and tenants, threatening to place a large, inflatable rat and distribute flyers in front of any building where a Local 1212 company may be working. Local 814 has been justifying their actions based solely on the claim that Local 1212 companies do not pay their employees prevailing wages. The MMA advises the following actions for landlords or tenants who are facing disturbances created by Local 814 activity and likewise do not wish to engage in an unlawful secondary boycott. Such activity may result in exposing otherwise neutral third parties to possible involvement in civil actions and/or a public protest by MMA members and is available to help with issues regarding this matter.
1.) Advising Local 814 in the event a "rat" or other balloon is inflated in connection with a particular job site, no member of either union will work in the building until Local 814 agrees, in writing, to permanently remove it or not put it there in the first place.
2.) File a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against Local 814 in connection with Local 814's actions.
Note that Local 1212 members do & will not object to working with any other trades that usually work with Local 1212 in a relocation or renovation project. Should other tradesmen decide to honor a picket-line, that is their choice and should have no bearing on the tenants' leasehold responsibility or the ability of MMA members to complete any moving project in a timely fashion.
The MMA is a multi-employer trade association for moving companies signatory to a collective bargaining agreement with Local 1212. The MMA offers any assistance regarding these matters and can be reached at www.metmovers.org.
