The National Coalition For Men (NCFM) Urges the Canadian Government to End Discrimination Against Male Refugees

The female shooters in the recent mass shootings in Paris and San Bernardino, as well as the five female suicide bombers who killed a dozen people in Nigeria and Cameroon recently, all demonstrate how sexist and naive it is for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discriminate against single heterosexual men in his Refugee Program, which violates established global human rights policies of equal treatment. 

The National Coalition For Men (NCFM) takes no position on whether refugees in general should be accepted in Canada or elsewhere.  But excluding refugees just for having a penis is wrong and violates the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which forbids sexual discrimination and states in Article 7: "All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law."

An increasing number of women are joining ISIS and other terrorist groups. If a group is going to send terrorists disguised as refugees, they could easily send a woman, a married man, or a man who claims to be gay or bisexual. 

It is ironic, though not surprising, that Trudeau calls himself a feminist, a belief system that purports to be about equality, while he is also implementing this sexist policy. 

Sadly, his policy is one of many other instances of sexual discrimination against men in international humanitarian policies throughout history.  The International Forced Labour Convention of 1930, for example, banned slavery and forced labor, but Article 11 exempted "able-bodied males" ages 18-45, and Article 2 exempted prisoners and soldiers, who are 90% male.  In 2010, after the massive earthquake in Haiti, humanitarian groups gave food only to women, while men were left asking, "What about me?" In The Myth of Male Power, Warren Farrell talks about male disposability and the empathy gap between male and female suffering.  This concept still persists in many of our institutions, such as military conscription, criminal sentencing, public health policies, homelessness, workplace deaths, suicides, as well as in sexist policies like Trudeau's.      

NCFM calls for an end to this discrimination and encourages single heterosexual male refugees to take this issue up with the Canadian courts under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and, if necessary, with the United Nations Human Rights Court.
