The Netherlands Reports Record Job Creation In 2013 Foreign Direct Investment Results
-North America Represents More Than One-Third of Worldwide Projects-
NEW YORK, March 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The continuing strength of the Dutch investment climate helped produce record results in 2013. The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) supported the attraction of 193 foreign investment projects, representing nearly 8,500 jobs and the planned investment of $2.31 billion. The record jobs figure represents a 60% increase over the previous year.
While the most projects (75) originated in Asia, North America recorded 36 percent of the total (70). A rise in the number of projects from Europe (34) is a particularly significant increase over last year's total of 12. China posted 26 projects, South Korea 15, the United Kingdom 13 and India 11.
The United States maintains its top spot as the leading single-country investor overall with 64 projects. In addition, it is the source for the most jobs (3,190) and the highest investment amount ($1.11 billion).
"These results prove that the Netherlands continues to have an attractive and competitive business climate," said Jan-Emile van Rossum, Executive Director, NFIA North America. "We support this by investing in decisive location factors for foreign companies such as a well-educated labor force, an excellent physical and digital infrastructure, a thriving innovation environment and enviable 'quality-of-life' attributes."
In North America, a total of 21 headquarters projects out-paced the number attributed to European distribution centers (15). Marketing and sales activity and service centers tied for third place with 8 projects apiece. Similar to the last several years, the IT sector led the way with the most projects (21), followed by Life Sciences and Health (16).
"Positioning of the Netherlands as a business location, managing relations with existing investors, advising potential investors and monitoring the investment climate -- all these activities together will keep us ahead of the competition," said van Rossum. "New foreign investments contribute to Dutch economic growth, provide direct jobs and connect the Netherlands to the global economy."
