The Open Wing Alliance Pauses Best Western Campaign to Acknowledge Progress on Cage-Free Eggs
NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Open Wing Alliance (OWA), a global coalition of nearly 82 organizations working to end the abuse of chickens worldwide, announced today that it is pausing its public campaign against Best Western Hotels & Resorts to recognize meaningful progress toward the company's global cage-free egg commitment.
In its most recent update, Best Western reported that approximately 70% of its eggs globally are now cage-free, with Asia and Latin America showing significant advances from 40% to 70% in just one year. For the first time, the company has also publicly disclosed a global cage-free percentage and committed to a pilot purchase of cage-free egg credits in the first quarter of 2026.
"Best Western's public disclosure represents important movement from a company that has been silent on global cage-free egg progress for years," said Brooke Fane, Sr. Global Campaigns Lead at the Open Wing Alliance. "We're encouraged to see Best Western back on track, and we're giving them space to follow through. If a value-focused brand like Best Western is willing to invest in cage-free credits, competitors such as Radisson, Marriott, and Choice Hotels have no excuse to delay."
The OWA emphasized that while this pause acknowledges progress, it does not mark the end of its campaign. The coalition expects Best Western to publish a clear roadmap and complete its planned credit purchase by April 1, 2026. Should the company fail to demonstrate significant progress toward its commitment, the OWA and its member organizations are prepared to resume and escalate public accountability efforts.
By pausing its campaign, OWA signals its willingness to reward transparency and good-faith progress, while making clear that the public expects action, not unfulfilled promises.
