The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to Present the Athenagoras Human Rights Award to the CBS News Program "60 Minutes"
NEW YORK, Oct. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate has announced that on Saturday, October 19, the CBS News television program 60 Minutes will receive the prestigious Athenagoras Human Rights Award.
In 2009, CBS News President and 60 Minutes Executive Producer, Jeff Fager, Executive Editor Bill Owens, Producer Harry Radliffe, Co-Producer Michael Kazris, Associate Producer Magalie Laguerre and legendary CBS Newsman Bob Simon presented a segment on 60 Minutes that brought significant attention and support to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness, Bartholomew. The program continues to focus attention on religious freedom and human rights not only for the Ecumenical Patriarchate but also for other religious bodies and communities around the world.
In the segment, 60 Minutes combined two of the quintessential elements of the First Amendment: Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Religion to shed light on a critical issue to the Orthodox faith, which many in the world had never previously acknowledged. It was the first time a major American TV news program boldly revealed the Turkish government's persecution of Orthodox Christians and other religious minorities. This landmark reporting has given hope where there has been little, and strength through unity against such violations of basic human rights. The segment was just one of many examples in the history of 60 Minutes that this news program ignored an overwhelming lobby against such truths coming to light and instead stood up for human rights and religious freedom.
Past recipients of the Athenagoras Human Rights Award have included President Jimmy Carter, President George H.W. Bush, Mother Teresa, Elie Wiesel and Mikhail Gorbachev.
