NEW YORK, June 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Perecman Firm is a proud supporter of autism awareness and education and is asking for everyone to show support and sign their petition to pass Senator Schumer's legislation Avonte's Law. The City of New York and Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted a local-level Avonte's Law which will install security alarms on the doors of nearly all of the city's schools by the end of 2015.
Schumer's legislation focuses on developing and funding a program to provide voluntary tracking devices for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities who are prone to bolting from parents or caregivers. This program will also provide education and training for parents, school staff and local law enforcement agencies. Tracking technology includes personal locating devices that can prevent tragedy when individuals wander from school or home, and are lost. Tracking devices can be worn as non-tampering wristwatches, anklets, or clipped onto belt loops or shoe strings. They can also be sewn into specially designed clothing. When someone goes missing who is wearing the device, the caregiver notifies the device company and a trained emergency team responds to the area. Most who wander are found within a few miles from home. Recovery time averages around 30 minutes, which is 95 percent less time than it takes to find those without these tracking devices. Senator Schumer stated that these devices should be used in conjunction with other educational and behavioral tools. The additional funding will allow for families and local entities to work together to find the best possible solution for each individual child with ASD.
The Perecman Firm also created a scholarship in honor of Avonte for a college student suffering with autism or personally affected by it. Avonte's case has opened our eyes to the seriousness of this illness and we at The Perecman Firm are getting involved in the cause. On July 19th our company, family and friends will be participating in Walk Now for Autism Speaks in Brooklyn. We are committed to making a difference and finding ways to protect and enhance the lives of those suffering with autism. The Perecman Firm's very own Paralegal, Maria Davila's grandson Ethan was diagnosed with autism. Maria's daughter Barbara Davila, cofounded the non-profit organization Kidz Stop Inc. which is an alternative therapeutic arts program for children on the Autism Spectrum.
