The Rosenbach Celebrates Moby-Dick With 24-Hour Marathon Reading
Ambitious reading to be accompanied by VIP kickoff celebration, chowder tasting
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rosenbach is excited to present the Moby-Dick Marathon Reading, a 24-hour celebration of Herman Melville's classic novel. Beginning on Friday evening, October 19 and through Saturday, October 20, this collaboration with the Independence Seaport Museum will feature programs inspired by Melville's tale.
The Marathon Reading will take place at the Independence Seaport Museum and consists of:
- The Harpoon Saloon, a VIP fundraiser on the fantail of the Cruiser Olympia, kicks off the celebration on Friday, October 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will sing along with sea shanties, savor seafaring eats, and sip a glass of wine, all while supporting The Rosenbach and Independence Seaport Museum.
- The Marathon Reading, beginning immediately following The Harpoon Saloon, will feature volunteer readers who will read Moby-Dick aloud over the course of approximately 24 hours in scenic locations throughout the Independence Seaport Museum, including the deck of the Schooner Diligence and terraces overlooking the Delaware River.
- Queequeg's Chowder Tasting, taking place during the Marathon Reading on Saturday, October 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will feature warming chowder samples from local restaurants.
"With a peerless collection of Melville's rare books and letters, The Rosenbach is the ideal producer for a marathon reading of his greatest work, Moby-Dick," says Derick Dreher, John C. Hass Director of The Rosenbach. "We couldn't be happier to partner with the Independence Seaport Museum, which provides the perfect setting for our readings, from the Delaware River (on which we will celebrate aboard the Olympia), right down to the whaleboats inside the museum and the chowder we'll enjoy Saturday afternoon."
