Wines are selected by an experienced team of general managers and executive chefs, who are additionally tasked with creating the new fall wine lists for the 8-unit restaurant group, to be released in conjunction with the popular event. National Wine Week lists change daily in each restaurant and vary by location. This year's offerings range from Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Gris, Charles Krug Sauvignon Blanc, and Jordan Chardonnay to Faust Cabernet Sauvignon, Ferrari-Carano Siena, and Smith & Wollensky Private Reserve. The result—more than 200 different wines will be served over the course of 5 days in 8 locations nationwide, many for the first time in a major premium steakhouse. For several of the wines and wineries that are showcased, National Wine Week is viewed as prime exposure.
President Michael Feighery sees National Wine Week as an event that epitomizes the Smith & Wollensky commitment and service to its guests. "More than 20 years ago, we introduced our guests to the winemakers whose creations they enjoy with a Smith & Wollensky meal. We invited several top winemakers to pour their wines to our lunch crowds. National Wine Week was born and is now celebrated every March and September."
He continues, "Since its inception, National Wine Week has always been about wine education and knowledge of particular varietals and regions. Smith & Wollensky has been a huge supporter of domestic and international wineries, and we delight in introducing our guests to as-yet undiscovered gems from emerging independent wineries. If you've ever been curious about trying new wines, then you won't want to miss this event!"
The Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group has additional cause to celebrate—for the twenty-third consecutive year, the brand is being honored by Wine Spectator magazine. Each of the locations has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a nationwide honor given each year to restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers. The only exception is Chicago, which has received its third successive Best of Award of Excellence, created to give special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence. "Best of" wine lists typically boast 400 or more selections, superior presentation, and either vintage depth, with several vertical offerings of top wines, or excellent breadth across several wine regions.
National Wine Week is available to Smith & Wollensky diners anywhere à la carte dining is offered within the restaurant. Lunch service is between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in all participating units.
