The State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces May 2013 Highlights
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for May 2013:
New Civil War Exhibit: "Objects of Valor: Commemorating the Civil War in Pennsylvania" is a new standing exhibition coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The exhibition showcases treasured State Museum artifacts that reflect a century and a half of collecting, preserving and interpreting the commonwealth's Civil War experience.
Summer Day Camps: Reservations are now being accepted for three special one-day summer camps at The State Museum:
- Fossil Day Camps will be offered Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 26, 27 and 28, for children ages 9 to 12.
- Native American Day Camps will be offered Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 10, 11 and 12, for children ages 7 to 10.
- Mammals of Pennsylvania Day Camps will be offered Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, July 17, 18 and 19, for children ages 7 to 10.
All three camps, which include hands-on activities, are one-day courses, held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per child or $30 per child for State Museum Affiliate Members. Reservations may be made by calling 717-772-6997. Spaces are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis.
National History Day in Pennsylvania exhibits: 2012 award-winning History Day displays and projects are on view at The State Museum through June 23; National History Day in Pennsylvania is a project of the U.S. Army Heritage Center Foundation, Carlisle.
Harrisburg's 3rd in the Burg: The State Museum Store will offer specials on select Pennsylvania arts and crafts as well as Pennsylvania Civil War products on Friday, May 17, in conjunction with 3rd in the Burg, a monthly celebration of Harrisburg's arts and entertainment. The offers will continue throughout the weekend of May 18–19.
The State Planetarium: Bigger, Brighter, Bolder! The State Museum presents its newly-upgraded Planetarium XD, featuring the latest state-of-the-art technology. Shows offered through May 26 include:
"Astronaut" (grade 3 and up)
Explore the amazing worlds of inner and outer space, from floating around the International Space Station to maneuvering through microscopic regions of the human body. Narrated by Ewan McGregor. Saturdays, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m."BIG" (grade 6 and up)
An imaginative look at the size and scale of our universe. Explore the universe beginning with space probes reaching out to our Solar System, then telescopes collecting the light from the stars. With a lighthearted storytelling style and unique characters, "BIG" brings a really big subject down to earth. Narrated by Sir Richard Attenborough. Saturdays, noon and 2 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.
Planetarium shows are $2 per person, in addition to general admission; free to State Museum Affiliate Members.
Holiday Closure: The State Museum's administrative offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
