"The Tupac Prison Interview" Premieres October 12 -- Original Camera and Source Tapes to Be Offered at Auction
Filmmaker Patrick Heaphy revisits his 1995 Dannemora interview with Tupac Shakur and hopes the historic artifacts can help revive the anti-youth-violence concert that originally brought him there
NEW YORK, Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Filmmaker Patrick Heaphy and LCM247 will premiere The Tupac Prison Interviewon October 12, 2026 at 9:00 PM ET on YouTube, presenting Heaphy's extended 1995 conversation with Tupac Shakur while the artist was incarcerated at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.
The premiere takes place 31 years to the day after Shakur was released from Clinton Correctional Facility on October 12, 1995.
Heaphy personally filmed the interview earlier that year. What is less widely known is why he went to Dannemora in the first place.
"Most people don't know that I went to Dannemora to film Tupac for a proposed jailhouse concert aimed at stopping youth violence," said Heaphy. "But when the first thing he tells you is that he's getting out, you know the interview you came for is about to become something very different."
The concert never happened.
The interview did.
The conversation captured Tupac at a pivotal moment in his life — 24 years old, incarcerated, already a major recording artist and speaking candidly about his circumstances, ambitions and what he believed was coming next.
More than three decades later, Heaphy is returning to the footage and the unfinished idea that originally led him there.
The Camera, the Tapes and an Unfinished Mission
In conjunction with the premiere, Heaphy and LCM247 plan to offer at auction the original camera Heaphy used to film Tupac at Dannemora, together with original source tapes from the production.
Heaphy has personally authenticated the camera as the equipment used to capture the 1995 interview and owns the U.S.-registered copyright to the original interview footage.
"To me, the camera and tapes are more than production equipment — they're artifacts from one of Tupac's most candid and revealing conversations," said Heaphy. "They captured a young man whose influence would ultimately extend far beyond music and into the culture itself."
A portion of the planned auction proceeds is intended to help seed the development of a new concert against youth violence inspired by the event envisioned in 1995 but never realized.
The concept would bring together artists of today for a live event centered on music and the continuing challenge of youth violence, while also acknowledging Tupac's lasting influence.
Heaphy and LCM247 are also developing a crowdfunding campaign to help finance the concert.
"The reason I went to Dannemora in the first place was to help create a concert against youth violence," said Heaphy. "If the film, the camera and the tapes can now help us finally make that concert happen, that feels like the right next chapter."
Additional details regarding the auction, concert and crowdfunding campaign will be announced as plans develop.
