NEW YORK, Sept. 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The YMCA of Greater New York has been selected by Lincoln Financial Group as one of five finalists for Lincoln's Legacy Award in recognition of the YMCA's Y Scholars/Rowe Scholars program, which provides low-income New York area middle and high school students with the support and resources necessary to succeed in high school and gain acceptance to the college of their choosing. The award recognizes organizations whose programs advance Abraham Lincoln's legacy of freedom and opportunity through education.
The voting period for the award begins on September 14 and ends on October 2, and is open to anyone age 13 or older. During the 2014-2015 academic year, Y Scholars/Rowe Scholars served 1,659 middle and high schools students at 22 sites across the five boroughs. This June, 96 percent of the program's 12th grade participants graduated on time, far exceeding the 64 percent overall graduation rate for New York City students. A remarkable 95 percent of Y Scholars/Rowe Scholars graduates achieved college acceptance, the majority of whom will be first-generation college students.
