Theater District Houston Opens Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund

HOUSTON, Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hurricane Harvey caused catastrophic flooding across Houston. In Houston's Theater District, the Alley Theatre, the Houston Ballet's Center for Dance, Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, the Wortham Theater Center and Theater District Parking Garages suffered water damage. In the wake of the storm, Theater District Houston has created a fund to support the efforts of resident companies who are rebuilding after the storm.

"After Harvey, Theater District Houston's offices were inundated with calls, texts and e-mails from colleagues and patrons across the U.S. asking about ways to help," said Kathryn McNiel, CEO of Theater District Houston. "We set up this fund to help our resident companies affected by the storm, so that they will be able to return to the stage as soon as possible." 

Companies benefitting from the fund are the Alley Theatre, Da Camera of Houston, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts and Theatre Under The Stars. All of the organizations have been impacted by the storm in some way, from damage to the Ballet's studio facilities at the Center for Dance to expenses incurred by organizations that have had to find alternative locations for productions originally scheduled for the Alley Theatre, which will be closed for repairs through mid-November; Jones Hall, which will be closed through the end of September; and the Wortham Theater Center, which will be closed through May 2018. Donations will help rebuild the venues and support organizations that have lost offices, costumes, props and more.
