Thermally conductive polycarbonate and insulating polyurethane improve thermal performance of electronics
In-mold encapsulation technique eliminates assembly steps, improves production efficiency
ORLANDO, Fla., May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To prevent LED lighting from overheating, electronic component manufacturers often use a heat sink cast of a conductive metal alloy to manage the temperature of a device. Yet, heat sinks can require significant secondary assembly and a large number of sub-components – inadvertently slowing the manufacturing process and adding cost. To avoid this, LED manufacturers are seeking ways to streamline the process, reduce labor costs and improve the thermal performance of electronic components.
A unique combination of thermally conductive Makrolon® TC8030 polycarbonate and Bayflex® polyurethane, in-mold electronic component assembly and encapsulation reduces the number of components, and creates a finished part without the need for manual assembly.
Terry G. Davis, principal engineer, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, will present "Thermal Management of Electronic Components Using Makrolon® Polycarbonate and Bayflex® Polyurethane," during ITherm 2014 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.
Davis will discuss research, co-authored with Dave Rocco, senior engineer, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, detailing how the use of Bayer materials during the in-mold assembly and encapsulation process offers similar thermal performance to aluminum while helping reduce costs by eliminating assembly steps, improving production efficiency and reducing capital investments.
ITherm 2014 takes place May 27-30, in Orlando, Fla.
