Three Colloquium Charter Pediatric Members Place in the Top Five of U.S. News Best Children's Hospitals Rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium announced today that five out of five Colloquium charter pediatric hospitals were ranked in the top 50 for cardiology and heart surgery in the U.S. News ratings of 179 pediatric hospitals. Three Colloquium charter pediatric hospitals ranked in the top five slots:

• Ranked 2^nd - The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA
• Ranked 3^rd - Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX
• Ranked 5^th - Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH
• Ranked 24^th - Mayo Clinic Children's Center in  Rochester, MN
• Ranked 31^st - Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in  Wilmington,  DE

The decision to focus resources on childhood heart failure began in 2009 as an impromptu informal discussion at the Heart Failure Society of America's Annual Meeting in Toronto. This population of children has been underserved historically. The Colloquium chose its first charter pediatric member hospitals based upon skillset, competencies, and the willingness to work together to advance the cause of childhood heart failure together – as a Colloquium.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center (CCHMC) was the first to earn the designation, Accredited Pediatric Heart Failure Institute. Subsequently, Colloquium Board Chair, Dr. Frank Smart appointed Dr. John Lynn Jefferies (CCHMC Director, Cardiomyopathy, Advanced Heart Failure) as the Colloquium's national pediatric heart failure chair.

Each of the pediatric charter member hospitals has selected their heart failure leadership teams and has completed an initial gap analysis. Based upon the Colloquium's novel transdisciplinary approach to heart failure accreditation for adult hospitals, adding pediatric hospitals helps fulfill the Colloquium's commitment to covering the entire continuum of care for heart failure. Experts working with experts, the pediatric charter members have taken on the responsibility of adapting the heart failure accreditation process to the pediatric world.

An additional five charter pediatric member hospitals are queuing up to launch in Q3 2013. Following the launch of the second wave of the pediatric charter members, the Colloquium will open the process to other pediatric hospitals that seek pre-eminence and have the desire to meaningfully contribute to making the world a better place for children with heart failure.

The Colloquium is the first organization to develop an improvement science based approach pediatric heart failure accreditation using a continuum of care model.
