LOS ANGELES and SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tickets for Station to Station: A Nomadic Happening go on sale on Friday, August 9, 2013. Station to Station is the newest project from artist Doug Aitken, a liquid platform for artistic experimentation that connects artists, musicians, and cultural icons with diverse communities for a series of interventions and site-specific happenings. Over the course of three weeks in September, a train will travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making nine stops along the way in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, each time for a one-night only live event.

An artist-driven public art project made possible by the Levi's® brand, all funds from the sale of the tickets, as well as donations that can be made on the Station to Station website, go to support non-traditional programming at Station to Station's partner institutions: MoMA PS1, Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Walker Art Center, SITE Santa Fe, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Sundance Institute, and Arcosanti Institute.

The $25 tickets for each of the nine happenings will go on sale on Friday, August 9, at 12 noon in local markets, here http://stationtostation.com/tickets/.

A moving platform for artistic experimentation, Station to Station invites artists and audiences alike to participate in a creative collision of contemporary art, experimental music, and film. Art works and musical performances will change at every stop. Across the entire journey, musical performances will include: Beck, Boredoms, Cat Power, Cold Cave, The Congos, Dan Deacon, Eleanor Friedberger, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Handsome Family, Lia Ices, Jim Jarmusch & SQURL, Kansas City Marching Cobras, Lucky Dragons, Connan Mockasin, Giorgio Moroder, Nite Jewel, No Age, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Savages, Sun Araw, THEESatisfaction, Twin Shadow, and others to be announced.

Site-specific works by the following artists will be featured throughout the journey: Doug Aitken, Allora & Calzadilla, Kathryn Andrews, Kenneth Anger, Taylor-Ruth Baldwin, Yto Barrada, Olaf Breuning, Kate Casanova, Peter Coffin, Bruce Conner, Thomas Demand, Cheryl Donnegan, Sam Durant, Olafur Eliasson, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Fischli & Weiss, Meschac Gaba, Theaster Gates, Liz Glynn, Fritz Haeg, Carsten Holler, Christian Jankowski, Aaron Koblin, Ernesto Neto, Catherine Opie, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, Raymond Pettibon, Nicolas Provost, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Jack Pierson, Kelly Sears, Stephen Shore, Josh Smith, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ryan Trecartin, James Turrell, and Lawrence Weiner, among others.

Throughout the journey, the food experience is inspired by Station to Station curator, Alice Waters, supporting the Edible Schoolyard Project. Working with Ms. Waters and inspired by her legacy, chef and forager, Leif Hedendal, will create customized culinary interventions both on the train and at each stop to include Slow Food farmers' markets and his famed Dinner Discussions.

Each happening will feature five Nomadic Sculptures created by Kenneth Anger, Urs Fisher, Liz Glynn, Carsten Holler, and Ernesto Neto. The artists were asked to envision a yurt (a portable tent-like dwelling traditionally used by nomads in Central Asia). The Nomadic Sculptures range from Holler's yurt pierced with holes that visitors can throw Frisbees through, to Glynn's creation of the universe that will evolve at each stop.

Every happening will begin with a procession organized by Meschac Gaba—twelve participants wearing different African headdresses will walk among the public as they enter the venue. At each stop a different flag created by Lawrence Weiner will be raised. Kathryn Andrew envisioned a poster for each city—the poster will have an image of one randomly chosen person, and that poster will become the "face" of the happening at each stop.

Additionally, at each stop the Levi's® brand will create and curate yurts, designed as an intimate gallery-like setting where local artists will be designing and crafting new products in real time. A tribute to the Levi's® brand's "Makers" program, the Levi's® yurts will celebrate local artisan products. Artists featured include Folk Fibers, Cobra Boots, Chimayo, and Junkyard Jeans.

Details about each happening follows (*details and participants are subject to change*):

Friday, September 6, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m.
Duggal Greenhouse, Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York
The new, state-of-the-art Duggal Greenhouse is the setting for the New York happening and launch of Station to Station. Performers appearing in New York include No Age, Charlotte Gainsbourg & Connan Mockasin, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Jim Jarmusch & SQURL, The Boredoms, and others to be announced.

Also appearing are The Kansas City Marching Cobras, a unique, region-specific African American marching band that merges traditional dance with aspects of voodoo. Station to Station is bringing this dynamic group to New York, as well as to Pittsburgh, for an energetic, disruptive performance.

Station to Station will re-stage Robert Rauschenberg's Pelican (1963), his first choreographed performance piece. Pelican was originally staged in a roller-skating rink and featured Rauschenberg, Per Olof Ultvelt, Carolyn Brown, and two pairs of bicycle wheels on axles.

Rirkrit Tiravanija, known for his participatory and performative installations, will hand out a surprise to guests, while Olaf Breuning will create a site-specific Technicolor smoke performance (which he will also stage in Barstow and Oakland).

Sunday, September 8, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m.
Union Station/The Pennsylvanian, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvanian was designed and constructed around 1900, and was originally a train terminus and office building for the Pennsylvania railroad. The happening in Pittsburgh will feature performances by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, The Boredoms, No Age, and others to be announced.

Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m.
Union Station, Chicago, IL
Originally designed by famed architect Daniel Burnham and completed in 1925 by the Graham, Anderson, Probst and White Firm, the Beaux Arts-style building is the setting for the Chicago happening, which will feature performances by Black Monks of Mississippi (choreography by Theaster Gates) and No Age, among others to be announced. Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates and Black Monks of Mississippi will bring together elements of Eastern restraint, Gospel, and Blues music that is sure to be a transcendent and participatory experience.

Thursday, September 12, 2013, 7:00-10:30 p.m.
Union Depot, St. Paul, MN
Union Depot in downtown St. Paul has been transformed from a defunct rail station to an active transportation center in the heart of a thriving urban neighborhood and serves as the terminus of Twin Cities' newest LRT line, connecting the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The evening will include performances by Eleanor Friedberger, No Age, and others to be announced.

Kate Casanova's Vivarium Americana will be parked amongst the Nomadic Structures. It is a sculptural work in which the interior of a black 1976 AMC Pacer has become overgrown with live oyster mushrooms.

While guests arrive for the happening, a performance choreographed by the BodyCartography Project, using the produce of Fritz Haeg's Edible Gardens that was commissioned by the Walker Art Center, will take place.

Wednesday, September 18, 2013, 6:00-9:30 p.m.
Lamy, New Mexico
The site of the opening scenes of David Bowie's The Man Who Fell to Earth, Lamy is a desolate town with a population of approximately 220 people and a single room train station. Station to Station will merge with this desert landscape to create a unique happening. Performers include Cat Power, The Handsome Family, Nite Jewel, THEESatisfaction, and others to be announced.

Saturday, September 21, 2013, 5:00-10:00 p.m.
La Posada, Winslow, Arizona
Located 35 miles from James Turrell's Roden Crater, Winslow exists as an underground art community that was created through the passage of the rails and Route 66. The La Posada, built by the Santa Fe Railway, will feature performances by Cat Power, Cold Cave, Giorgio Moroder, THEESatisfaction, and others to be announced.

Ed Ruscha gave Station to Station a recipe for a cactus omelet, and Chef Leif Hedendal will prepare the omelet for 200 people. This edible artwork will be served only in Winslow, and the recipe itself will be used to make a poster.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013, 6:00-10:00 p.m.
Skyline Drive-In, Barstow, California
In Barstow, Station to Station will move into a large, high-desert drive-in movie theater. At dusk, the entire grounds of the two-screen drive-in will be activated by experimental music and performances that will merge with moving images projected on the drive-in screens. The Skyline Drive-In will feature musical performances by Beck, Cat Power, No Age, Cold Cave, Lucky Dragons, and others to be announced.

Peter Coffin's UFO will fly over the Barstow happening. The design, based on popular depictions of UFO's, is covered by panels that hold 3,500 brightly colored LED lights that are controlled by a Pharos computer system and capable of displaying video.

Thursday, September 26, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m.
Union Station, Los Angeles, California

Saturday, September 28, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m.
16th Street Station, Oakland, California

About Station to Station
Station to Station is a nomadic "Happening" that moves by train from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Coast stopping at nine different locations from  major cities to off-the-grid spots, each time for a one-night-only live event. An artist-driven public art project made possible by the Levi's® brand, Station to Station will raise funds through ticket sales and donations to support non-traditional programming partner institutions around the country. A moving platform for artistic experimentation, the train's journey will be constantly changing as artists and audiences alike encounter a creative collision of contemporary art, experimental music, and film. The Doug Aitken designed train turned kinetic sculpture will act as a cultural studio—globally broadcasting unique content and experiences from the stops as well as on the moving train. Long after departing the last station, Station to Station will leave an indelible creative mark on its local and global audience—opening eyes and shifting perceptions.
