
Tidewater Military Family Services Council Receives Opportunity Hall of Fame Award
RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 25, 2012, Tidewater Military Family Services Council (TMFSC) was presented an Opportunity Hall of Fame award by Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell in Richmond, Virginia. The awards are part of the First Lady's Initiatives Team Effort (FLITE), which Mrs. McDonnell started in 2010 to acknowledge certain organizations and individuals who exemplify the model of creating a Commonwealth of Opportunity in their communities.
Speaking about the Opportunity Hall of Fame award recipients, Mrs. McDonnell stated, "I launched FLITE because I wanted to recognize great people of our state who are working tirelessly to help others. These incredible individuals and organizations are making Virginia a better place to live, work and raise a family."
The FLITE Foundation recognizes people and organizations in four key areas:
- Preventive healthcare and wellness
- Economic development through promotion of Virginia wine, film, and tourism
- Service to the military and their families
- Women in Business
TMFSC was recognized for their service to the military and their families. They were one of four organizations to be acknowledged as one that works to create "a commonwealth of opportunity … doing great works of charity and sacrifice every day." The award included a $2,000 grant to further their work.

Susan Burns (National Family Affairs Advocate, Lincoln Military Housing) founded the TMFSC in 2008, with the support of senior leadership of Lincoln Military Housing, making Lincoln Military Housing the founding member organization along with 11 other local organizations, all of which support military families.
TMFSC is now a coalition of over 3 dozen local organizations, all of whom turn to TMFSC for an outlet which yields collaboration, partnerships, sharing of resources, and a vital outlet to market programs across all five armed services. The member organizations of TMFSC offer military families every kind of support program, class, activity, and resource needed in order to assist families in staying strong, staying mission-ready, and planning for the future.
