NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Tim McGraw, Paul Overstreet and the Stanley Brothers were officially inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 18, during the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's 2026 Medallion Ceremony. But the multiplatinum singer, the ace songwriter, and the bluegrass music pioneers were connected long before they became the 159th, 160th and 161st Hall of Fame members together.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young, who led the Medallion Ceremony, recounted in his remarks that McGraw arrived in Nashville at 1 a.m. on May 9, 1989, with a pawn shop guitar and an ambitious dream to make country music. Later that morning, the world learned that the young New Traditionalist singer Keith Whitley had died.

"Now, some people might call that a bad omen," McGraw said during his induction speech. "I've come to believe it was something else. I think Nashville was telling me the truth on my very first day: that this music costs something. The people who make it give everything that they've got. And if you're lucky enough to make it down the road, you owe it to the ones that didn't and the ones who paved it."

Whitley, a 2022 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, was a student of bluegrass music. Early in his career, he started a band with 2018 inductee Ricky Skaggs that specialized in the repertoire of the Stanley Brothers. Whitley and Skaggs later became members of Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys. Only a few months before he died at age 34, Whitley earned his second #1 single with the song "When You Say Nothing at All," written by Overstreet and 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Don Schlitz.

"I don't believe that's coincidence — I believe that's country music," McGraw said. "It's a chain, and every link holds up the next one."

TIM MCGRAW

With an ear for memorable songs and a musical style that could be both tough and tender, Tim McGraw became one of the most versatile and recognizable country music stars in the 1990s and 2000s. After establishing his music career, he explored acting and landed leading roles in the Hollywood films "The Blind Side," "Country Strong" and "Friday Night Lights," and in the TV series "1883."

"Someday I hope some kid pulls into town with everything they own in a suitcase and a dream too big to fit in it. Maybe they'll hear one of my songs on the radio. And I hope it tells them what I learned from Keith: getting here comes with a cost," a visibly emotional McGraw said as he concluded his speech. "But standing here tonight, in front of all of you, in front of all of my heroes . . . in this moment, tonight, man, it's worth it."

McGraw's list of thank yous began with seven women who helped him reach this career pinnacle: his mother, Betty Ann D'Agostino Trimble; his wife, fellow country singer Faith Hill; his daughters, Audrey, Gracie and Maggie; and his sisters, Sandy and Tracey. Alabama member Randy Owen also focused on McGraw's roots while leading his induction.

"Home has never left his heart. Family has never left his heart. Country music has never left his heart," Owen said. "We're all so lucky that we can call him one of us."

Musical tributes to McGraw included Parker McCollum's heartfelt and faithful version of McGraw's first #1 single, 1994's "Don't Take the Girl"; a sweet rendition of McGraw's 1997 chart-topper, "Just to See You Smile," by Lainey Wilson, who grew up down the road from where McGraw was raised; and Lady A's take on "Live Like You Were Dying," arguably the night's most emotional performance. The trio's Charles Kelley, who was recently diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, sang lead with deep feeling and skill, and bandmates Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott elevated the award-winning crossover hit with their powerful harmony vocals.

"Hearing my songs sung back in your voices is such a strange and beautiful thing," McGraw told them all. "It's like . . . finding a letter you wrote a long time ago and learning it got to where it was going."

PAUL OVERSTREET

A master of catchy melodies and clever, concise wordplay, Paul Overstreet wrote some of the most popular and enduring songs of the 1980s and'90s, including 27 Top Ten country hits between 1981 and 1991 and 13 #1 hits overall. BMI named him Country Songwriter of the Year for an unprecedented five consecutive years (1987 to 1991), and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted him in 2003.

"Paul took his own ups and downs and turned them into three-minute messages of hope for millions of listeners — title by title, song by song, hit by hit," said Museum CEO Kyle Young. Overstreet's songs brought a modern perspective to time-tested themes: relationships, faith, family, the power of love to unify and heal — and, in the case of a Blake Shelton chart-topper, bad days. Before performing his 2004 single "Some Beach," Shelton told the crowd about how, as a teenager, he idolized Overstreet and, as an aspiring artist, hoped to one day record one of his songs.

"I never dreamed that my Paul Overstreet song would be a song called 'Some Beach,'" he said to laughter, "but damn it, I'm proud of it."

In addition to Shelton's performance, Country Music Hall of Fame member Dean Dillon delivered a song he wrote with Overstreet, "If I Could Bottle This Up," which George Jones recorded in 1988 with Shelby Lynne, while Jamey Johnson's deep and powerful voice proved a perfect match for Randy Travis's 1987 award-winning hit "Forever and Ever, Amen." Overstreet was inducted by Tanya Tucker — whose 1973 concert in Waco, Texas, persuaded Overstreet to move to Nashville to begin his career as a songwriter and singer. Tucker, who recorded Overstreet's composition "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love" with Overstreet and Paul Davis and scored a #1 country hit — praised the songwriter's talent and his heart.

"The brilliant songwriting of Paul Overstreet speaks for itself, but it's Paul Overstreet the friend and the brother that will always be dear to me," she said. In 1988, several months in a rehabilitation program left Tucker uncertain about her life and career, but when she heard "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love" on the radio after leaving the facility, she recalled, "It gave me something to live for and reminded me of the love of a friend that could and would last a lifetime."

THE STANLEY BROTHERS

Before Hall of Fame members Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs performed the bluegrass standard "Rank Stranger" with guitarist Jeff White, Skaggs said there was nobody happier to see the Stanley Brothers join the Country Music Hall of Fame. Judging by the standing ovations and loud cheers from the crowd throughout the three-hour ceremony, however, that's debatable. Clearly, the induction of brothers Ralph and Carter Stanley, officially performed by Gill, was long awaited by many in attendance.

"This moment has been a lifetime in the making, and it is difficult to put into words what it means to see my father, alongside my Uncle Carter, honored in this way — just the way my daddy wanted it to be — both of them side by side," said Lisa Stanley Marshall, daughter of Ralph Stanley, who represented the Stanley family alongside her brother, Ralph Stanley II, and her cousin, Jeanie Stanley, Carter Stanley's daughter.

"They were the cream of the crop," Jeanie added, "and it has been a long time coming."

Two additional performances in the Stanleys' honor showed just how driving and high-spirited bluegrass can be. Billy Strings and his band earned a standing ovation for their high-octane take on "How Mountain Girls Can Love," full of fast-fingered solos. Similarly, the First Ladies of Bluegrass — Alison Brown, Becky Buller, Sierra Hull, Missy Raines and Molly Tuttle — dazzled with fiery solos on a brisk version of "Bound to Ride." They perform the song with Dolly Parton on a new Stanley Brothers tribute album and added the recordings of Parton's spirited interjections into their live performance.

"Ralph Stanley often rejected the word 'bluegrass' as means of describing the Stanley Brothers' music. It was 'old-time mountain music,' he said, and no one should dare challenge the good doctor on defining his own craft," Museum CEO Kyle Young said. "However, the acoustic instrumentation, the stark lyrics, [and] the blood-resonant harmonies all point to a definitive musical style that is as popular today, eighty years since its commercial inception, [as] ever before."

ABOUT THE MEDALLION CEREMONY

The annual Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony is when the year's members-elect officially join their heroes, influences and peers as Hall of Fame members. The celebratory ceremony highlights each new member's talent, achievements and legacy through emotional speeches, surprise musical tributes and video biographies, and a current Hall of Fame member inducts each member-elect.

At the 2026 Medallion Ceremony, the museum's 31st, the Medallion All-Star Band backed many of the night's tribute performances. Led by musical director and acoustic guitarist Biff Watson, the group also included drummer Mark Beckett, keyboard player Jen Gunderman, harmony singer Tania Hancheroff, bassist Alison Prestwood, fiddler and mandolin player Deanie Richardson, pedal steel player Scotty Sanders, acoustic guitarist and harmony singer Jeff White and electric guitarist Charlie Worsham.

At the start of the night, attendees observed a moment of silence in honor of Dolly Parton and Don Schlitz, the two Country Music Hall of Fame members who died within the last year. Patty Loveless, who joined the Hall of Fame in 2023, closed the event with an upbeat performance of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," altering the lyrics just slightly in tribute to Parton and Schlitz.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum produces the Medallion Ceremony, and the Country Music Association — which elects new Country Music Hall of Fame members —underwrites the event with City National Bank. This is the museum's 31st Medallion Ceremony
