CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A total of 21 Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) employees – five individuals and two teams – were honored today with the company's James B. Duke Award – the company's highest employee award for service to the company and community. The awards honor accomplishments performed in 2010.

Honored were:
- Tim Ansell, operations manager, Fayette Energy Facility, Masontown, Pa.
- Jenny Bulach, production manager, East Bend Station, Union, Ky.
- Mike Butler, production manager, Duke Energy Generation Services, Cincinnati
- Stuart Heishman, director, Business Development, Charlotte
- Lee Taylor, consulting engineer, Charlotte
- Four team members representing the Cherokee-Swain Tie Station effort in western North Carolina
- Twelve team members working at and supporting the Jocassee Hydroelectric Station, Salem, S.C.
The James B. Duke Award continues the company's long tradition of recognizing leadership and service in the community and the workplace.
Winners are nominated and selected by their peers. Here is a brief summary of the employees' accomplishments:
The Cherokee-Swain Tie Station Team – Fred Alexander, Franklin, N.C., and Brian Franklin, Matt Peshel and Randy Veltri, Charlotte – was honored as it helped site a new tie station in western North Carolina – negotiating with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) to avoid visibility with a piece of sacred property of the EBCI.
The Jocassee Hydro Team – Carol Goolsby and Greg Lewis, Charlotte; Eddie Duncan, Jeff Hulsey, Reggie King, Chad Luce, Barry Cain, Chris Rogers, Eric Bush, Steve Windham, Richard Land and Phil Garrett, Salem, S.C. – was honored as the team isolated and repaired a difficult mechanical issue at the hydro station before it became a larger issue and caused extensive damage at the plant.
Ansell was honored for his process improvements at the company's combined cycle natural gas fleet – decreasing startup durations and reducing natural gas usage.
Bulach, who has a child with Cystic Fibrosis, was honored for her local and national work to raise money and awareness to combat the disease.
Butler was honored for his work to help the people of Haiti recover from 2010's devastating earthquake. He was also honored for a life-saving event during his most recent stay in the country.
Heishman was honored for his economic development work to attract such companies as American Express, Apple, and Facebook to the Carolinas.
Taylor was honored for his efforts to help lower overall power outages and process improvements to help lower interruptions to customers.
