Tower Companies' Tower Building and 1909 K Street Re-Certified LEED® Gold under U.S. Green Building Council EBOM Rating System

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Tower Companies announced today that U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has Re-Certified The Tower Building and 1909 K Street LEED® Gold under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Management ("EBOM"). Notably, The Tower Building was the region's first new green office building when built in 2001 and 1909 K was DC's first green renovation in 1999. Both green properties were completed before the USGBC standards were established.   

The Tower Building and 1909 K Street were awarded 72 and 73 points, respectively, and achieved LEED Gold Re-Certification by pulling together a team of knowledgeable property managers, building engineers, local consultants, vendors and contractors. The team was awarded key credits for alternative transportation, water efficiency, energy efficiency performance, existing building commissioning and energy management, emissions reduction reporting, off-site renewable energy purchases, green cleaning practices, and various topics related to Tower's green lease requirements. 

According to the LEED Certified Project Directory, The Tower Building is the 3^rd multi-tenant commercial office building to receive LEED Re-Certification in Maryland and 1909 K Street is the 2nd multi-tenant commercial office building to receive LEED EBOM Re-Certification in Washington, D.C.

Both The Tower Building and 1909 K Street were previously certified LEED EBOM in 2009, respectively, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has rated the properties ENERGY STAR® buildings for the past three consecutive years.   

The Tower Building is a ten-story, 276,000 SF commercial office building, whose iconic soaring elliptical design can be seen rising above the I-270 high-tech corridor, ten miles northwest of Washington, DC. The building won the 2002 Apartment and Office Building Association (AOBA) Green Building of the Year Award and was the subject of Urban Land Institute Case Study (2004).
