Utilizing NDSP Optimization: Moving Beyond Manual Outsourcing

In recent years, many paratransit software companies have highlighted the importance of integrating with Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), such as Uber, Lyft, and taxi providers, known in the industry as Non-Dedicated Service Providers (NDSPs). This integration aims to improve efficiency and help address driver shortages by allowing dispatchers to seamlessly send eligible trips to TNC platforms. Results: The program achieved measurable gains including significant reductions in cost, better on-time performance, greater operational agility, and increased customer satisfaction. In 2024, after over 1.24 million trips were optimized, the solution achieved very low error rates and very high system availability (99.83% of all trips inputted into the system were optimized). This resulted in an average savings of $22.88 per trip and 4-5 hours of work each day. MBTA's improved performance with the help of AlphaRoute earned the 2025 Innovative Solutions Award.
