Transgender ASU Student Fights to Clear His Name and Return to School in Civil Rights Case
After the Department of Education decided to disregard the civil rights complaints of transgender students, artist Leopoldo Bloom tries to resolve His case through the courts
PHOENIX, Oct. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 8, Ann Hobart, assistant attorney general of Arizona, drafted a Settlement Agreement and General Release between the defendant, known as "Leopoldo Bloom" and the Arizona Board of Regents for and on behalf of Arizona State University (ASU), as well as Adriene Jenik, Betsy Schneider, Julie Anande, Dawn Russo and Mark Klett.

Last year, on July 28, attorney Cheri L. McCracken, on behalf of Mr. Bloom, instituted a civil rights lawsuit against the State of Arizona, known as United States District Court Case Number CV17-02524-PHX-DGC. During Mr. Bloom's tenure as a graduate student, he encountered numerous medical emergencies related to the denial of transgender health care. As a new student he encountered a hostile work environment when he refused to publicly discuss matters of his health. He was subjected to discrimination and retaliation in violation of Title VII and Title IX. After Mr. Bloom filed a civil rights complaint with ASU on May 1, 2016, his grants were revoked and the School of Art fabricated reports of threatening and harassing behavior to the Arizona State Police stationed on campus. Mr. Bloom was wrongfully suspended, banned from campus; the student body was publicly notified that he was a safety threat and not to communicate with him.
The aforementioned agreement is currently in dispute after ASU revised the terms of the original agreement adding that Mr. Bloom's suspension would be removed from his educational records only if he agreed not to seek or accept readmittance to ASU.
