Travel Advantage Network Helps Local Neglected Parrots

Employees raise funds for The Icarus Foundation Inc.'s Chesapeake Parrot Sanctuary

MILLERSVILLE, Md., Aug. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Travel Advantage Network, a vacation accommodations program, selects a charity each month and fundraises for the chosen charity through a variety of activities. For the month of July, the company supported The Icarus Foundation Inc.'s Chesapeake Parrot Sanctuary. The charity was one that is close to the hearts of the Travel Advantage Network family, as the company's mascot is Sunny, the parrot.

"Birds are considered the third largest group of animals kept as pets in the United States, after cats and dogs; however, the abuse and neglect they face is rarely heard of," Hannah Mantooth, the B2B Vendor Sales Coordinator and leader of this month's charity efforts, said. "I wanted to spread awareness, more than anything, about the care, time and dedication these animals require."

Throughout the month of July, employees participated in a variety of activities including jeans days and weekly bingo and trivia, involving facts about the parrot species. Other activities included "Build Your Own Bird Seed" day and "Tropical Fruit Smoothie" day, where employees could create treats with their co-workers.

"It's important to me to help charities in the area as a way to give back to my community," Mantooth said. "Animals, including parrots, are high on my list of charitable causes to advocate for."

In total, over $1,000 was raised for The Icarus Foundation Inc.'s Chesapeake Parrot Sanctuary.  The money will help the founder, Christine Richter Zotto, and her team to continue to care for these parrots by providing them with the food, habitat and stimulation that they need.
