Trump-Vance CPSC Breaks Biden-Era Recall Record More Than 100 Days Ahead of Schedule

WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced it has surpassed the 2024 record for product safety recalls and warnings, more than three months before the end of the calendar year. This surge reflects a stronger, faster, and more vigilant CPSC focused on protecting American families. It also demonstrates CPSC's resolve to confront foreign manufacturers that break U.S. laws and put Americans in harm's way.

In 2024, under the Biden Administration, the Commission issued 369 recalls and warnings, the highest number under that Administration but not an all-time agency record. With more than three months remaining in 2025, the Commission has already exceeded that total, issuing 376 recalls and safety warnings so far. At this pace, the Trump-Vance CPSC is on track to break the all-time agency record set in 2007.

Far from a repeat of 2007's "Year of the Recall," when CPSC was overwhelmed and unable to stop a flood of toxic toys from China, today's numbers reflect an efficient and well-equipped Commission acting quickly to protect families. CPSC's continued exercise of its civil and criminal penalty authorities means more firms are reporting dangerous defects without delay. Earlier this year, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, CPSC secured the first-ever criminal sentences for executives who failed to report a deadly product defect, totaling nearly 80 months in federal prison.

CPSC now also maintains a significant presence at U.S. ports and along the border. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, CPSC investigators screened tens of thousands of shipments and requested seizures of over 750,000 individual units for consumer product violations before they reached U.S. homes. Among these were hundreds of thousands of lead-contaminated toys, apparel, and nursery products that in past eras were allowed to enter the country undetected. These dangerous items are now being intercepted at the border before they can endanger children.

This year's surge in recalls and warnings shows that CPSC is working more efficiently to identify hazards quickly, intervene sooner, and deliver strong protection for American families. 

The evidence is overwhelming that China is a leading source of low-quality and unsafe products entering U.S. homes, particularly through e-commerce platforms. In 2024, just under half of CPSC recalls and warnings involved products from China. So far in 2025, that share has grown to nearly 66 percent, representing a one-third increase in a single year. Almost 92 percent of these recalled Chinese products are tied to e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Walmart.com, Temu, Shein, and AliExpress.

This year's enforcement actions have included: the largest swimming pool recall in agency history, covering more than five million Chinese-made above-ground pools after at least nine toddler drownings; a record-breaking 28 recalls and warnings announced in just a single week; and an urgent safety alert on dangerous counterfeit Labubu dolls. Other major recalls included infant loungers, lithium-ion batteries, and power banks, each posing life-threatening hazards.

These results are a testament to the hard work of the men and women at CPSC and our partners throughout the federal government. Going forward, CPSC intends to keep up this momentum, protecting American families and holding manufacturers of dangerous goods accountable.
