Turnbridge introduces new outpatient addiction treatment services

Turnbridge, located in New Haven, Connecticut, has become one of the nation's leading addiction treatment programs for emerging adults–people between the ages of 17 and 24. It had to overcome significant odds to achieve this distinction. When the program was getting started in 2003, it faced staunch opposition from residents and city officials who attempted to use zoning bylaws to prevent it from acquiring property. Nationwide and in Connecticut, the drug overdose and addiction problem is growing. Connecticut's chief medical examiner reported a 25 percent increase in overdose deaths in 2016, continuing the trend from recent years. Connecticut is not alone. The entire country continues to suffer from epidemic rates of addiction and overdose.

For more than 15 years, people from around the country have travelled to Turnbridge in New Haven to receive high-quality integrated addiction treatment. Turnbridge, with a clinical center on Orange Street and sober living homes throughout New Haven, has earned a reputation as a highly effective program that helps people achieve lasting recovery, independence, and improved well-being.

Turnbridge is an innovator in the addiction treatment field. They developed a graduated three-phased treatment program that helps clients gain skills and independence at their own pace. They were among the first programs in the country to eliminate arbitrary lengths of stay and to measure progress and program completion one client at a time. They also pioneered the gradual re-immersion of clients into real-world settings and situations that may have previously triggered addictive behaviors in order to develop stronger resilience while in treatment and reduce the likelihood of relapse. A recent outcome study indicated that 95 percent of people who complete the Turnbridge program achieve one year of sobriety, and more that 80 percent achieved two years of sobriety. The study also showed that 95 percent of Turnbridge clients with 270 days of treatment experienced significant behavioral improvements including better physical and mental health, the ability to maintain employment, better interpersonal relationships, and overall self-sufficiency.

During Turnbridge's outpatient program ribbon-cutting ceremony, New Haven mayor Toni Harp said, "Cities throughout the nation have been enduring a tragic opioid epidemic. The opening event was also attended by state's attorney Patrick Griffin and the city's health director Dr. Byron Kennedy.
