Two Generations Later: A Hoosier Composer's World War II-Era Songs Resurrected

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In an extraordinary story spanning generations, two songs written in 1944 by Indiana native and amateur songwriter Luke Funk have been revived by their family in 2025. The songs, There's a Place for You and Me (Back Home in Indiana) and Your Eyes are Blue (And I Love You), have been newly arranged by Steve Perillo, CEO of Perillo Tours. Funk's sons and grandson performed the songs. Their revival includes beautifully crafted music videos filmed on location in Indiana, bringing these historic compositions to a modern audience.

The music videos were shot at the former Funk family farm in Earl Park, Indiana, and along the picturesque Wabash River in West Lafayette, Indiana. The project stemmed from a simple lead sheet and a faint 1945 acetate recording sung by Edna Odell, known then as the Hoosier Songbird. Despite limited original materials, the family was determined to breathe new life into these compositions.

Luke Funk's grandson, Robbie Steiner, a professional musical theater performer and singer, was thrilled to take part in the project. "I've sung many great songs, but nothing compares to performing my grandpa's songs with my own family!" he said.

Bass player Tom Funk, son of Luke Funk, reflected on the historical significance of the songs. "They capture the spirit of small-town Indiana while war raged around the world. Just months after writing them, my dad was called to serve in the Pacific."

The project gained momentum when Jim Funk, Luke's son and the songs' producer and guitarist, discussed the idea over dinner with his cousin, Steve Perillo. "Knowing Steve was a musician, I mentioned the songs. When he showed interest in reviving them, I knew we were off and running!"

Perillo, whose mother, Kathleen Funk, was Luke and Paul's sister, is a pianist and tour operator. Upon hearing the old recordings, he immediately recognized their potential. "The songs were simple but well-structured in the classic verse-chorus style of the time," he noted. He also credited Paul Funk, a talented pianist, for shaping the chord progressions.
