UC Irvine Extension Information Systems Security Program Announces Articulation Agreement With University Of Maryland, Baltimore County Graduate Cybersecurity Program

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- University of California, Irvine Extension recently announced an articulation agreement with University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) to help security systems professionals attain a master's degree from the Cybersecurity program at the UMBC Graduate School and College of Engineering and Information Technology. This agreement will allow graduates of UC Irvine Extension's Information Systems Security Certificate Program to apply specified academic course credits towards UMBC's Cybersecurity master's program.  

"Due to a rise in security breaches, cybersecurity is becoming an increasingly important field," said Dave Dimas, Ph.D., director of engineering, sciences, and information technology at UC Irvine Extension. "Obtaining UC Irvine Extension's certificate allows security professionals to utilize the foundation created to continue their educational pursuits towards a graduate degree in cybersecurity."

The new articulation agreement provides course participants with the ability to transfer credits from the following completed courses: "Introduction to Information Systems Security," "Secure Systems" or "Network Security: Concepts & Technologies"; "Security Architecture & Design"; "Project Risk Management"; and "Introduction to Project Management Principles and Practices." These UC Irvine Extension courses will constitute 12 graduate credits for the UMBC Cybersecurity graduate program. In order to be eligible, students must earn the equivalent of a "B" or higher in each of the courses listed above. Once participants have completed the UC Irvine Extension Information Systems Security certificate program and additional courses for the UMBC Cybersecurity graduate program, they will receive a master's degree in Professional Studies (MPS): Cybersecurity from UMBC.

UC Irvine Extension's Information Systems Security certificate program is designed specifically for security professionals, security technicians and security auditors. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the basic principles for designing, engineering and managing secure information systems environments. Additionally, numerous topics will be discussed, including access control, application development security, business continuity and disaster recovery planning, cryptography, information security governance and risk management, legal, regulations, investigations and compliance, operations security, physical (environmental) security, security architecture and design and telecommunications and network security.
