UK pathology provider Diagnexia chooses Sectra to speed up pathology reporting for the NHS
LINKÖPING, Sweden, Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- International medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra (STO: SECT B) has signed an agreement with Diagnexia in the UK to deliver its service for advanced share and collaborate workflows. Diagnexia will now be able to receive, send and report on pathology cases digitally from NHS organisations that need support from external specialists. This supports the development of national telepathology networks in the UK and widens access to specialist expertise for patients.
"UK pathology has spent a decade building digital capability one site at a time. Sectra has already done the connecting work across more than 500 institutions in radiology. Joining that network means the groundwork is done before the conversation starts," says Donal O'Shea, Chief Executive Officer at Diagnexia.
Diagnexia is a UK provider of digital pathology services and a diagnostic partner to more than 30 NHS organizations. It gives NHS services access to over 250 GMC-registered specialist pathologists for routine, urgent and specialist cases, backlog clearance and MDT attendance. Its services integrate directly with Trusts' existing LIS and PACS. Diagnexia runs a UKAS-accredited (ISO 15189:2022) histology laboratory in Oxford and digital accessioning facilities in Oxford and Exeter, both registered with the CQC.
The service, Sectra Image Exchange Portal (Sectra IEP), is a cloud-based, vendor-neutral platform for exchanging and collaborating around medical images. It is already used by more than 500 institutions, mainly within radiology. Following a substantial modernization, healthcare providers can now use the service for advanced workflows. It is also open to specialties other than radiology, and customers can go beyond image sharing to manage workflows between organisations.
"Every new connection strengthens the network, and with Diagnexia now joining IEP, a national telepathology network is rapidly becoming reality. For hospitals already connected to IEP, the benefit is immediate: Diagnexia's reporting capacity is now accessible through the same connection and workflows they use today. No new integration, no separate supplier onboarding, and no additional infrastructure. Hospitals can quickly tap into specialist expertise and additional reporting capacity from Diagnexia, helping them manage demand and reduce reporting backlogs," says Jane Rendall, Managing Director for Sectra UK and Ireland.
The contract was signed in the second quarter of Sectra's 2026/2027 fiscal year and renews annually, covering up to 100,000 cases in the first year.
NHS pathology services are handling growing case volumes with a limited number of reporting consultants, and increasing subspecialisation means the pathologist best suited to a case is often at another organisation. Sending work to external capacity providers today typically relies on bespoke arrangements between individual laboratories, including the transportation of physical glass slides. This slows reporting times and creates administrative overhead for both the sending and receiving laboratories. With Sectra's service, a case can be created as a job directly from a laboratory's worklist, delegated to a receiving organisation, and the completed report returned to the referring organisation's own records.
