Underwriters Laboratories Inc. elects two new trustees

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Nov. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) today announced it elected Darryll Pines, Ph.D. and Philip S. Khoury, Ph.D. to UL's board of trustees.

UL's nonprofit parent company advances the UL mission by combining research, outreach, standards development and education to drive innovative solutions and regularly convenes interested stakeholders to share data-driven knowledge. Darryll Pines

Pines serves as the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Engineering and the dean for the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

He has testified before Congress on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and created the Top 25 Source Schools program for Maryland high schools. At a national level, he has led an effort, as part of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Engineering Deans Council's K-12 STEM Committee, to develop a potential College Board AP exam in engineering.

During a leave of absence from the University of Maryland, Pines served as a program manager for the Tactical Technology Office and Defense Sciences Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). While at DARPA, Pines initiated five new programs related to the development of advanced aerospace technologies for the U.S. military. For his DARPA program management leadership and innovation, he was awarded the Department of Defense's Distinguished Service Medal. 

He is a fellow of the Institute of Physics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the ASEE, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and he was awarded the 2012 ASME Adoptive Structures and Materials Systems Best Paper Award for his work in structural health monitoring. Pines also was inducted as a member of the Tau Beta PI Honor Society Class of 2013 for his emphasis on academic excellence in engineering. Pines was recognized in 2015 with the  Speaker's Medallion from the Maryland State House, which honors those who have had a significant impact on the well-being of citizens of the state of Maryland. He has served on the Executive and Advisory Board for Engineers Without Borders-EWB National, the National GEM Consortium, Mechanical Engineering Visiting Committees at MIT, University of Toledo and the University of Washington and is serving as independent corporate director on the boards of two major corporations: Engility LLC and Aurora Flight Sciences.

Pines received a Ph.D. and master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Philip S. Khoury

Khoury is the Ford International Professor of History and associate provost at MIT, where he has served on the faculty since 1981. 

He is a political and social historian of the Middle East and previously served as the faculty associate of Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies. His work on the region has appeared in numerous publications, including the Cambridge University Press, the University of California Press and the Princeton University Press. His work in the latter publication earned him the George Louis Beer Prize from the American Historical Association.

Khoury currently serves as chairman of the American University of Beirut board of trustees as well as vice chairman of the Trinity College board of trustees and was the past chairman of the World Peace Foundation. Additionally, he is a trustee of the National Humanities Center and the Toynbee Prize Foundation, and overseer of Koç University in Istanbul.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally, he has been awarded fellowships from the Fulbright-Hays Foundation, Social Science Research Council, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies and Thomas J. Watson Foundation. He earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Trinity College.
