CLEVELAND, Dec. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- University Hospitals Case Medical Center has appointed Daniel I. Simon, MD, as the academic medical center's new President effective Jan. 1, 2016.
Dr. Simon will succeed Fred C. Rothstein, MD, who announced his retirement this summer after serving as President of UH Case Medical Center and one of the most influential leaders at the health system for the past 12 years.
Dr. Simon is a nationally renowned leader in the field of cardiology. His dynamic leadership qualities and collegial style have enhanced the prominence of UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, where he has served as Director since 2006 and as President since 2014. Throughout his tenure, he and his team have developed and executed growth, business and clinical strategies to enhance patient access, clinical integration and quality outcomes. Additionally, he has served as Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UH Case Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He also holds the Herman K. Hellerstein, MD, Chair in Cardiovascular Research at UH Case Medical Center and the School of Medicine.

Dr. Simon received his MD from Harvard Medical School where he graduated summa cum laude. He completed his residency, internship and fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and interventional cardiology training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He joined the faculty of Brigham and Women's Hospital where he rose through the ranks to Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Simon is an active interventional cardiologist and continues to play a leading role in national and international clinical trials investigating new devices, anti-thrombotic drugs, and regenerative medicine/adult stem cell therapies. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed basic science and clinical journals and has served on the editorial boards of Circulation, published by the American Heart Association, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He was recently appointed to the editorial board of JAMA Cardiology, a new publication of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
A recipient of numerous research awards, Dr. Simon was elected into the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Association of University Cardiologists, and the Association of American Physicians. He is a recipient of the prestigious MERIT Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Additionally, Dr. Simon is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
His main area of research interest is the role of inflammation in vascular injury and repair. His research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Prentiss Foundation, the Medtronic Foundation and the Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals. Dr. Simon is also board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
