BERKELEY, Calif. and LANDOVER, Md., Nov. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- 2U, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWOU), and UC Berkeley, School of Information (I School) today announced a partnership to deliver cybersecurity@berkeley, a new online Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS) program to address a growing need for qualified cybersecurity professionals and leaders. The program is being developed in collaboration with the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity and the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley.
"Once uncommon and rare, cybersecurity breaches are commonplace today and threatening governments and nearly all organizations; meanwhile industry is struggling to find qualified cybersecurity professionals to combat these increasing threats," said Annalee Saxenian, dean and professor in the School of Information at UC Berkeley. "cybersecurity@berkeley is modeled after the I School's existing Master of Information and Data Science program, a highly successful venture that has demonstrated how a partnership with 2U can deliver significant value to UC Berkeley and students worldwide."
The MICS program will address both technical and interdisciplinary aspects of cybersecurity including cryptography, secure programming, web security, operating system security, and network security as well as business models, policy and legal frameworks, national security considerations, ethical issues, standards making and the roles of users, government, and industry.
MICS students and faculty will use 2U's online platform to meet weekly in live online classes in an intimate seminar-style setting. Between live class sessions, students will study interactive course content created by UC Berkeley faculty. Students will also have multiple opportunities to visit the Berkeley campus to meet classmates and faculty in person and to attend specially curated cybersecurity lectures and workshops.
cybersecurity@berkeley consists of 27 units and is designed for working professionals with a technical background and programming experience. The first class is expected to begin January 2018, pending approval by UC Berkeley, the University of California, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
