University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences Launches Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship and Clinical Orthopaedic Residency Programs

"USAHS is excited to relaunch our Residency and Fellowship programs," said Dr. Wanda Nitsch, president and chief academic officer, USAHS. "As physical therapy practitioners progress in their career, many want to distinguish themselves from other clinicians. Our residency, fellowship and continuing professional education programs provide a strong pathway for physical therapists to identify and master a specialty practice area through guidance, mentorship from seasoned clinicians and a focused curriculum with advanced clinical and didactic instruction."

Through the USAHS programs, both residents and fellows-in-training will participate in unique mentoring sessions, guest speakers and didactic work with distinguished USAHS faculty and experts, including USAHS founder and manual therapy expert, Dr. Stanley Paris.

About the USAHS Clinical Orthopaedic Residency Program:
The USAHS Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency program is designed to produce clinicians who demonstrate superior post-professional clinical skills, advanced knowledge in clinical practice, and ability to function as consultants, advocates, and educators of their patients and clinics. The program is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) and can be completed anywhere in the U.S. This 12 – 26 month program combines clinical mentoring in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy with seminars and online learning. Graduates of this program will be eligible to sit for the ABPTS OCS Board Exam, as well as be eligible for a Fellowship program.

About the Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program:
The USAHS Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship program offers practicing physical therapists the opportunity to enhance their manual physical therapy skills through a focused curriculum with advanced clinical and didactic instruction that is intensive and extensive. Fellows-in-training participate in a mentored process of learning which advances clinical specialty skills for both psychomotor and didactic learning. Fellowship graduates are trained for leadership positions, such as teaching orthopaedic manual physical therapy and undertaking clinical research.

The ABPTRFE accredited Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Fellowship is a 12-36 month program that combines clinical mentoring in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy with seminars and online learning. Graduates of this program are eligible to become fellows of the American Academy of the Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (AAOMPT).

In addition, participants can also earn academic credit toward the university's transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Education programs.

"At a time when many of my peers are feeling stale in their career, mine feels like it's just begun!," said Dr. Maria Ijomanta, a 2011 USAHS Orthopaedic Manual Therapy fellow. "The program content is so rich; I can now see myself venturing into research, teaching, mentoring, and more! This is where I want to be, and this is what I had hoped for."
