UNM Marketing Students Launch Ad Campaign To Promote Careers In Fuel And Petrochemical Industries

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Undergraduate marketing students at The University of New Mexico (UNM) Anderson School of Management unveiled a new outreach campaign to promote careers in the fuel and petrochemical manufacturing industries titled "Fuel Your Career." The campaign is part of the AFPM Recruitment Challenge, an industry-education partnership program sponsored by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) and managed by EdVenture Partners.

The launch is supported by an integrated marketing campaign featuring presentations to high school and college students, digital signage, online video and social media content. The campaign was developed by the student-run advertising agency at UNM's Johnson Marketing Lab using a $1,000 budget provided by AFPM.

"This program is a unique and exciting opportunity for my classmates and me," said agency coordinator Somi Phaybouth. "It enables us to apply what we are learning in the classroom to a real-world marketing challenge faced by employers."

"Fuel Your Career" showcases the wealth of well-paying, in-demand career opportunities in the fuel and petrochemical industries. The objective of the outreach campaign is to increase awareness and interest among 16- to 22-year-olds in skilled craft careers in the industries.

The fuel and petrochemical industries, two of the largest in the U.S., collectively support nearly two million American jobs. The industries are expected to support almost 3.9 million jobs by 2025. According to a 2014 The State of American Energy report, the average annual salary is $111,542 in the refinery industry. The 2015 Guide to the Business of Chemistry states that the average annual salary in the chemical industry is $93,000.

Launched in 2014, the AFPM Workforce Development portal acts as a gateway for individuals who are interested in learning more about working in the fuel and petrochemical industries. The site includes information about job types, educational opportunities, job resources and much more.

UNM is one of 14 schools throughout the country participating in the AFPM Recruitment Challenge. The top three schools will be invited to Houston to present their research, campaign and results to AFPM and industry executives. The top team will receive a scholarship prize of $5,000, followed by $3,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third.
