TUESDAY, AUGUST 2: SPIDER-MAN
Profile America — Tuesday, August 2nd. The recent expensive and controversial Broadway show about Spider-Man has put the superhero back in the news. Actually Spidey gets around pretty well for his age. It was this week in 1962 that Amazing Fantasy Comics appeared with the first story about teenager Peter Parker. Bitten by a radioactive spider, Parker finds he has super powers and has to deal with the responsibilities that come with them. Spider-Man is one of the most commercially successful superheroes worldwide. Aside from Broadway, he has appeared on television and motion pictures, while continuing in newspaper comic strips and comic books. Close to 40 new shows open on Broadway each year, drawing audiences of more than 12 million. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
