SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10: EMILY DICKINSON
Profile America — Saturday, December 10th. Today marks the birthday of one of the nation's most important poets — Emily Dickinson, born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1830. She was a frail, reclusive woman, who published only a handful of poems during her lifetime. After her death in 1886, her sister discovered almost 2,000 additional poems locked in a bureau drawer. These were gradually released, and today, Emily Dickinson's body of work is recognized as one of the most original in all of the English language. Her poems are constantly being reprinted and appear on the shelves of many of the nation's more than 20,000 book stores, which sell over $17 billion worth of books each year. Profile America is produced by the U.S. Census Bureau: measuring America—People, Places, and Our Economy.
