MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1: 1970 CENSUS
Profile America — Monday, February 1st. The national census this April will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 19th census in 1970 profiled a nation in political and military turmoil. There were more than 203 million residents of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories. New York, continued to head the list of largest cities, followed by Chicago, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. In the decade to follow, the U.S. wrestled with an Arab oil embargo, President Richard Nixon resigned, and the last U.S. servicemen left Vietnam. One of the top books was "Jonathon Livingston Seagull," by Richard Bach. At the decade's end, entertainment superstar Elvis Presley died at 42.
