THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11: 1890 CENSUS
Profile America — Thursday, February 11th. The national census this April will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 11th census in 1890 profiled a nation finally connected from coast-to-coast. Nearly 63 million people lived within the 42 states. Three cities were home to more than 1 million — New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. In the decade to come, Ellis Island opened to process the wave of European immgrants, the first U.S. automobile was manufactured, and the first professional football game was played, as well as the first U.S. Golf Open. At the end of decade, the U.S. entered the Spanish-American War and annexed the kingdom of Hawaii. You can learn more about the census in U.S. history online at 2010.census.gov.
