WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24: CHESTER NIMITZ
Profile America — Wednesday, February 24th. One of the great figures in American Naval history was born on this day in Fredericksburg, Texas in 1885 — Chester Nimitz. He took over the Pacific Fleet immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In that role, Nimitz was one of the principal architects of victory in the vast Pacific Theater during World War II. He was the U.S. representative at the surrender ceremonies in Tokyo Bay, and the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is named in his honor. In 1945, when Nimitz commanded all naval forces in the Pacific, there were nearly 3.5 million men and women serving in the U.S. Navy. Today, the Navy has over 328,000 officers and enlisted personnel. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, now conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
