SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7: BUSTER CRABBE
Profile America — Sunday, February 7th. Today marks the birthday of one of the first people to turn athletic achievement into a movie career — Clarence Crabbe — far better known by his nickname, Buster. He won a bronze and then a gold medal in swimming events at two Olympics. Crabbe then turned to the movies and ended up playing all three of the most popular pulp fiction heroes of the 1930s — Tarzan, Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon. He also acted in a number of westerns. Later, even though he had been retired from competitive swimming for many years, Buster Crabbe set a 400-meter freestyle record for swimmers in their sixties. There are more than 52 million people of all ages in the U.S. who enjoy swimming on a regular basis. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
