THURSDAY, JANUARY 6: BUCK ROGERS
Profile America -- Thursday, January 6th. One of the most influential comic strips in American history was seen for the first time this week in 1929, "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century." The first science fiction comic strip, Buck Rogers caught the imagination of a generation already enthused about aviation and early rocket research, and featured inventions based on scientific possibility. The strip appeared in newspapers for 38 years and spawned a movie serial, books for juveniles, a radio show, and later, a television series and a feature motion picture. When Buck Rogers first burst on the public awareness, there were nearly 2,000 daily newspapers, read by more than 39 million subscribers. Today, there are just over 1,400 dailies, with a circulation close to 49 million. Profile America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
