TUESDAY, JULY 19: MAGIC BASEBALL MOMENT

Profile America — Tuesday, July 19th.  One of the  rarest plays in baseball was seen for the first time in the modern era on this day in 1909, an unassisted triple play, during an American League game between the Cleveland Naps and the team from Boston.  With men on first and second, Naps shortstop Neal Ball caught a line drive, stepped on second to double off one runner and tagged another before he could return to first base.  To top off his day, Neal Ball also hit a home run, as Cleveland beat Boston 6-to-1.  While such dramatic plays are not often seen, the number of fans watching baseball games continues to grow.  In recent years, attendance at major league parks has been as high as 80 million annually.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
