TUESDAY, JUNE 14: PIONEERING WOMAN PHOTOGRAPHER

Profile America — Tuesday, June 14th.  Today marks the birthday in 1904 of one of the nation's most accomplished photographers and a pioneering woman in the profession.  Margaret Bourke-White was one of the first photojournalists for Life magazine, and the first westerner allowed to take photographs in the Soviet Union.  Many of her images of poor tenant farmers during the U.S. drought of the mid- 1930s are considered classics.  In World War II, Margaret Bourke-White was the first woman accredited as a war correspondent, and crossed the German border with Patton's troops.  Her pictures of concentration camps brought home the reality of the Holocaust to a shocked nation. Today, 45 percent of America's 188,000 professional photographers are women.  Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
