THURSDAY, JUNE 21: MIDNIGHT SUN BASEBALL
Profile America — Thursday, June 21st. Night baseball has been around for almost 80 years —but did you know that baseball has been played at night without artificial lights for many more years than that? It will happen again this evening at 10:30 at Fairbanks, Alaska, when the 107th annual Midnight Sun Baseball Game gets under way to celebrate the longest day of the year. The game usually lasts until 1:30 or 2 a.m., and is stopped at midnight so the crowd can sing the Alaska Flag song. This year the Alaska Goldpanners will host a team called the Merchants from Everett, Washington. Across the U.S., 11.5 million people play baseball each year. Slightly more play on softball teams. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
