SUNDAY, JUNE 5: AIDS FIRST NOTED 30 YEARS AGO
Profile America — Sunday, June 5th. Thirty years ago today, the Centers for Disease Control described a new illness — which a year later was officially named Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS. The virus that causes the disease was identified in 1983 and named HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Later, research showed the first person to succumb to the illness in the developed world died in 1959. More than 583,000 Americans have died of AIDS, while the worldwide toll is some 25 million. In the U.S., more than 39,000 new cases are reported each year. An estimated 471,000 Americans are currently living with the disease. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
