WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8: A PREMIER U.S. ARCHITECT
Profile America — Wednesday, June 8th. Some houses simply sit on the land -- others look as if they are part of the land and belong there. That was the philosophy of one of America's most influential architects -- Frank Lloyd Wright, whose birthday in 1867 is noted today. His style, radical for the time, was based on natural form and featured open rooms, skylights, and large windows. Some famous examples of his work are the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and the renowned summer home called "Fallingwater," built over a stream in Pennsylvania. Wright continued to work until his death at the age of 91 and his ideas still impact the work of the nation's 204,000 architects, one in four of them women.
