FRIDAY, MARCH 16: BLACK PRESS DAY

Profile America — March 16th.  Today is Black Press Day, noting the publication in New York City on this date in 1827 of the first African-American newspaper in the U.S. called Freedom's Journal.  It was the work of John Russwurm, the first black college graduate, and partner, Samuel Cornish.  Today, African-Americans are a growing part of the nation's overall communications industry, and their efforts generate revenue of $2.5 billion annually.  Black business owners in this field have over 14,000 firms, including more than 3,000 publishing firms, 2,300 Internet based businesses, and nearly 3,800 motion picture and sound recording companies.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
